For over two decades, Sankha Banerjee has explored the possibilities of the graphic novel as a meeting ground between literature, painting, history, and sequential art. His pages move beyond conventional comics, treating each spread as an independent work of art where visual metaphor, expressive anatomy, theatrical composition, and symbolic landscapes become integral to storytelling. Drawing upon archaeological research, Indian performance traditions, historical sources, and contemporary visual culture, Banerjee has developed a distinctive graphic language that is both deeply rooted in the subcontinent and unmistakably contemporary.
His acclaimed Mahabharata series—Vyasa: The Beginning (2017) and Panchali: The Game of Dice (2022), published by Penguin India in collaboration with writer Sibaji Bandyopadhyay—reimagines India's greatest epic through an entirely new visual identity. Beyond mythology, his graphic novels include By Water, By Fire (Plough Publishing, New York), created with Jason Lutes and Richard Mommsen, which reflects on memory, faith, and displacement, and Nelson Mandela (21g), a visual biography celebrating the life and legacy of one of the twentieth century's greatest humanists.
Across these works, Banerjee treats the graphic novel not simply as an illustrated book but as a sophisticated artistic medium, where painting, design, and narrative merge to create immersive visual experiences that engage with history, politics, mythology, identity, and the human condition.
